1. A Peek-Inside-the-Walls Tool
It’s best to know what’s inside a wall—pipes, cables, an exhaust vent—before you take a reciprocating saw to it. Or maybe you want to see if your insulation has settled, leaving gaps at the top that cause drafts. The answer? An inspection tool featuring a waterproof minicamera attached to a flexible cable. It can fit inside a tiny hole to show you what’s hidden behind walls, floors, and ceilings by sending real-time images to a monitor. The least expensive model we found costs about $70. High-end versions aimed at pros offer a larger screen with a higher resolution, but even the less expensive versions have LED lights at the tip of the camera for seeing in the dark and can be accessorized with a hook, mirror, or magnet to see around nooks or grab that fastener that fell down the register vent.
